As student loan debt in America continues to soar, there are small glimmers of hope for borrowers struggling to pay it off. One such glimmer came recently in the form of a student loan forgiveness waiver, which has now been approved for 453,000 borrowers. While processing for more applications continues, those who have been approved will see their remaining student loan debt, along with any accrued interest, fully forgiven.
It’s important to note that this waiver applies specifically to borrowers who were misled by their schools about the quality of education they would receive, or who were defrauded by the school itself. This is a significant step forward in helping those who have been targeted by predatory for-profit colleges. The forgiveness program is part of a broader move by the Biden administration to alleviate the burden of student loan debt in America.
Perhaps most notably, this waiver includes forgiveness of debt that was previously deemed unallowable under current law. This means that, in addition to the 453,000 borrowers already approved, there may be thousands more who are suddenly eligible for forgiveness.
While it’s certainly a positive development, the sheer number of borrowers struggling with student loan debt in America means we still have a long way to go. The topic remains relevant and important as we look towards a future where education is accessible and affordable for all.
