So I came across this article the other day called A Look at 9 Popular Career Advice on TikTok: Is #CareerTok Reliable?, and it was pretty eye-opening. Basically, the article explores the trend of people using TikTok as a source for job and career advice, and whether or not it’s actually a dependable resource.
From what I gathered, the verdict is kind of…mixed. On one hand, there are tons of helpful videos out there with practical advice and tips on things like resumes, interviews, and networking. But on the other hand, there are also a lot of influencers spouting off generic, one-size-fits-all advice that may not actually apply to everyone’s unique career goals and situations.
Personally, I’ve never really turned to TikTok for career advice, but I can imagine how tempting it might be to take advice from someone with a large following or a relatable persona. Heck, I’ll admit that I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of watching videos from career coaches or motivational speakers on YouTube before, thinking that watching a 10-minute video will magically make me more productive or motivated.
In the end, I think the article brings up a great point that it’s important to approach career advice with a critical eye, no matter where it’s coming from. It’s definitely helpful to learn from other people’s experiences, but at the end of the day, everyone’s career journey is going to be different.
So if you’re ever feeling lost or unsure about your professional path, by all means, check out some TikTok videos or whatever other resources you find helpful - but remember to take everything with a grain of salt and always trust your own instincts.
