Charleston man begins prison sentence for failing to pay employment taxes

So I was reading this crazy article today about a dude from Charleston who’s actually starting a prison sentence for not paying his employment taxes. Like, can you imagine? Apparently he was the owner of a business and just refused to pay his required taxes to the government. Big mistake buddy.

But anyways, let me give you the rundown. This guy, whose name is Brian Workman, was recently sentenced to a year and a day in prison for failing to pay over $140,000 in employment taxes. He owned a business that sold fire extinguishers and safety equipment, but instead of paying the taxes he owed, he used that money to pay for his personal expenses like vacations and a motorcycle.

And get this - he actually argued in court that he didn’t have to pay taxes because he believed that the income tax was unconstitutional. Spoiler alert: that did not go over well with the judge.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I always make sure to pay my taxes. It just seems like common sense to avoid getting hit with fines, jail time, or even just the stress of dealing with the IRS. Plus, taxes go towards important things like schools, roads, and healthcare.

So the takeaway here is pretty straightforward: always pay your taxes, folks. And if you’re a business owner, it’s even more important to stay on top of your financial obligations to the government. Otherwise, you just might end up like Mr. Workman - behind bars instead of on vacation.
