So, I was just reading this article about how there might not be a sequel to the Dungeons and Dragons movie, and it ’s kind of infuriating. Personally, I never got into the tabletop game but I did play the video game adaptation growing up and it was such a blast. Anyway, the article argues that the movie was actually great but it’s not doing well at the box office, so it might not be profitable enough to justify a sequel.
Basically, the author argues that the movie did a great job of capturing the spirit of the game - fantasy, adventure, and camaraderie. They specifically call out how well the cast played off of each other and how the special effects were impressive without feeling cheesy. However, despite positive critical reviews, it hasn’t been making the kind of money that studios want.
As someone who’s seen way too many great movies flop at the box office, I totally get why this is frustrating. It’s like, can’t people appreciate something that’s actually well-made instead of just going for the latest superhero retread? But I also know that Hollywood is a business, and studios are always going to prioritize making money over taking creative risks.
Anyway, I guess the takeaway here is that if you’re a fan of the tabletop game or just love classic fantasy adventures, go see the movie! And if you’ve already seen it and enjoyed it, maybe convince some friends to give it a chance too. Personally, I think it’s worth supporting something that’s trying to do something a little different, even if it doesn’t end up being a huge financial success.
