Eugene Levy: Mockumentary Genre Destroyed by Television Shows

So I just read this super interesting article about Eugene Levy, you know, the guy from Schitt’s Creek? Well, he was talking about how TV shows have ruined the mockumentary genre - you know, the whole fake documentary style of shows like The Office or Parks and Rec.

Basically, Levy argues that these shows have become so popular that they’ve saturated the market and made it really hard for new mockumentaries to find an audience. He also talks about how the genre used to be really niche and edgy, but now it’s sort of lost its edge and become too mainstream.

As someone who loves mockumentaries, I definitely see where he’s coming from. I mean, I adore The Office as much as the next person, but there are only so many “awkward boss” jokes a person can take, you know? And sometimes it feels like every other comedy is trying to be The Office or Parks and Rec.

But at the same time, I can’t help but think that mockumentaries still have a lot of potential. Yes, they might not be as groundbreaking as they once were, but I think there’s still room for new and innovative shows in the genre. And who knows, maybe in a few years we’ll look back on this as a period of growth and evolution for mockumentaries.

Overall, I think this article is really interesting because it raises some important questions about the power of television and the way certain genres can become over-saturated. It also makes me excited to see what the future holds for mockumentaries, and whether or not they’ll be able to break free from the shadow of shows like The Office.
