Yo, have you heard about the controversy surrounding the new Netflix series, Cleopatra? I just read this article on it called “Falsification Of History”: Egypt Goes Ballistic On Netflix Over Cleopatra’s Race and it’s wild.
Basically, people in Egypt are upset that the actress playing Cleopatra, Gal Gadot, is not Middle Eastern or African. They argue that it’s inaccurate and disrespectful to cast a white actress as the iconic Egyptian queen. Netflix has defended their decision, saying they cast the best actress for the role regardless of her ethnicity.
I think it’s really interesting how people are so passionate about historical representation in media. It reminds me of when I watched the movie Braveheart with my Scottish friend and he pointed out all the inaccuracies and historical liberties the filmmakers took. It didn’t bother me as much, but I could understand why it bothered him.
It’s important to be mindful of how we portray history, especially since media has such a large influence on our perceptions and understanding of the world. Plus, it’s always fun to debate and discuss the accuracy of historical movies and TV shows.
Anyway, that’s the gist of the article. What do you think about it?
