So, I just read this really cool article about how Hulu is going to release a documentary about Freaknik! If you don’t know, Freaknik was this massive party that happened in Atlanta every year during the ’90s. It was all about celebrating black culture and music, and it was way more than just your average block party. The whole city would get taken over for the weekend, and it was legendary.
Anyway, the documentary is going to tell the story of how Freaknik grew from a small neighborhood gathering into this huge cultural event, and how it eventually got shut down because of the chaos it caused. I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how things like that can be both really positive and really destructive at the same time.
I remember hearing about Freaknik from my parents, who lived in Atlanta during that time. They always talk about how amazing it was, but also how you had to be really careful because things could get out of hand. It was like this whole other world that they were a part of, but that I never really got to experience.
I’m definitely going to watch this documentary when it comes out, and I think it’s important to remember the impact that events like Freaknik had on culture and society. It’s also interesting to think about how things like that wouldn’t happen today because of how much more regulated everything is. But maybe that’s not necessarily a bad thing… or maybe it is! I guess we’ll have to watch and find out.
