How Friends Saved TV Show Theme Songs

So, I just stumbled upon this article called “How Friends Saved TV Show Theme Songs” and it’s actually fascinating. Basically, it talks about how TV networks used to just use popular songs for their theme songs, but then Friends came along and changed all that. The show’s creators wanted an original song, so they commissioned the songwriters behind the popular hit “I’ll Be There for You” to create a unique theme song for the show. Long story short, it caught on and other shows started commissioning original theme songs too.

What’s really interesting to me about this is how something as simple as a catchy tune can really stick with people and become such an important part of a show. I mean, I still get excited when I hear the theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, even though it’s been off the air for years.

But anyways, the article goes on to talk about how original theme songs became the norm thanks to Friends, and how they even spawned their own industry with people getting hired specifically to write theme songs for shows. It’s crazy to think about how something that seems so insignificant like a TV show theme song could actually have a big impact on the industry.

I think what’s most important to take away from this is that sometimes the little things can make a big difference. Something as simple as a theme song can become an integral part of a show’s identity and even start a trend that lasts for years. Who knows, maybe in the future we’ll see even more innovation in TV theme songs!
