How The High Friction Leader Endangers The New Workplace

As the world changes, so does the workplace. It has become increasingly important for companies to have leaders that can effectively navigate the demands of a more technologically advanced and diverse workforce. However, traditional models of leadership may not be effective anymore. In fact, a recent article on Forbes titled “How The High Friction Leader Endangers The New Workplace” highlights how high friction leaders can be detrimental to the modern workplace.

The article describes high friction leaders as those who hold on to old models of leadership that can actually hinder the progress of a business. These leaders are said to have a “my way or the highway” mentality, which can lead to reduced productivity, low morale, and a negative work environment. According to Forbes, high friction leaders may also not be equipped to handle the changes that come with a more diverse workforce - including different backgrounds, skillsets, and ways of thinking.

In contrast, the article advocates for leaders who are able to embrace change and adaptable to different working styles. The most successful leaders will bring their employees along them on the journey of change rather than stubbornly trying to hold onto traditional models.

As someone who has worked in a variety of industries, I can attest to the importance of having a leader who can manage through change. Resistance to change often leads to a poor working environment where employees feel unheard and undervalued. In contrast, when a leader is willing to accept feedback and adapt to new approaches, it fosters a positive and productive work environment.

Overall, it is important to recognize and avoid the pitfalls of high friction leadership in order to foster growth and progress in workplaces. Companies that prioritize selecting the right kind of leader and supporting them in making positive changes will create a more dynamic and successful environment for their teams.
