Have you heard of the Sunlight in Workplace Harassment Act? It’s a proposed piece of legislation that would require companies with 15 or more employees to disclose in their annual reports the number of sexual harassment claims they receive and settlements they pay out. On International Workers’ Day, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Jacky Rosen, along with Representative Ayanna Pressley Williams, reintroduced this important legislation to help shine a light on the pervasive problem of workplace harassment.
The bill would also require companies to reveal the number of employees who have been through harassment prevention training programs and create a task force to study the effectiveness of current harassment prevention techniques. This information would be crucial in encouraging companies to take a more proactive and transparent approach to dealing with workplace harassment.
The Sunlight in Workplace Harassment Act is especially important in light of the #MeToo movement, which brought to light the fact that millions of workers across the country suffer from harassment and discrimination every day. Without a strong legal framework to address this problem, many workers continue to suffer in silence.
As someone who has experienced workplace harassment, I believe that this legislation could make a real difference in the lives of workers everywhere. By promoting transparency and accountability among companies, we can create a safer, more equitable workplace for all. Let’s hope that the Sunlight in Workplace Harassment Act becomes law soon, so that workers can finally feel safe and secure on the job.
