The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has welcomed the passing of the Work Life Balance Bill, which grants employees the right to request flexible working arrangements. The new legislation will enable workers to have more control over their working hours and choose to work from home where possible, thereby achieving a better work-life balance.
The Bill is expected to benefit workers who have caregiving responsibilities or who may wish to pursue further education, and will also help to address the gender pay gap. The laws will apply to all employees with over six months’ service with their current employer, and requests for flexible working arrangements must be considered by the employer in a reasonable manner.
This new legislation has been a long time coming, and it is an important milestone for workers’ rights in Ireland. With so many people struggling to balance work and personal responsibilities, it is essential that employers start recognising the value of their employees having a healthy work-life balance. This new law should help create a more positive work culture and improve overall well-being for workers.
