Indiana gasoline taxes increase for third straight month

As gas prices remain high across the country, Indiana residents are feeling the pinch of increasing gasoline taxes for the third straight month. According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the state’s gasoline tax has gone up by one cent per gallon in July, bringing the total tax to 50.5 cents per gallon. This increase is part of a planned series of hikes that will eventually bring the tax to 58 cents per gallon by 2025.

Indiana lawmakers approved the 10-year plan in 2017 to fund road and bridge improvements throughout the state. The gas tax is one of several sources of revenue designed to generate $1.2 billion annually for transportation projects. Indiana’s fuel tax hike ties in with other states implementing fuel tax changes, prioritizing outer suburban and rural areas for investments.

The tax hike has sparked mixed reactions among Indiana drivers, with some feeling that the tax increase is necessary to improve the state’s infrastructure and others complaining about the higher prices at the pump. Despite protests from motorists, the hike in gas taxes is an important step toward making much-needed improvements to Indiana’s roads and bridges.

As the fuel tax continues to increase incrementally, it highlights the ongoing debate in the US regarding how best to pay for infrastructure improvements. Higher gas taxes may be unpopular, but investing in America’s transportation infrastructure can make a significant impact on the country’s economic future.
