So, I just read this crazy article about a lawsuit in a workplace death that might actually happen. Apparently, a man died on the job and his family sued the company, but the company tried to get the case thrown out. Well, now a court ruled that the case can continue.
Basically, the man was working at a company that makes pipes for oil and gas drilling. He was cleaning a piece of machinery when the machine turned on and killed him. His family sued the company for not having proper safety procedures in place. The company argued that because the incident happened while the man was cleaning the machine, he wasn’t technically “working” and they shouldn’t be held responsible.
But the court ruled that the man was, in fact, working at the time and the case can go to trial.
Honestly, I’m not surprised that things like this happen. I used to work at a restaurant where the managers would pressure us to work faster and cut corners on safety procedures. It was scary and frustrating, but we felt like we had to do it to keep our jobs. I’m just glad that this family is getting a chance to hold the company accountable for what happened to their loved one.
In any case, this ruling is a reminder that companies have a responsibility to keep their employees safe, even if it’s difficult or expensive. No job is worth someone’s life.
