I stumbled upon an article about Louisiana lawmakers rejecting the proposal to safeguard LGBTQ workers from discrimination and increasing minimum wage. It’s not entirely surprising given the political climate, but it’s still disheartening.
Basically, the bill aimed to include sexual orientation and gender identity in existing anti-discrimination laws. It also aimed to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour by January 2022. Unfortunately, both proposals were killed before they could even reach the governor’s desk for approval.
As a long-time resident of Louisiana, I’ve witnessed the struggles of minimum wage workers and the ongoing discrimination against the LGBTQ community. It’s frustrating to see efforts to improve their situations being shut down by those in power.
This issue is more than just about political ideology or personal beliefs. It’s about basic human rights and the well-being of our fellow citizens. It’s important to continue advocating for the protection and fair treatment of marginalized groups, even if the road ahead seems tough.
At the end of the day, we all deserve to live without fear of discrimination and to earn a living wage that allows us to support ourselves and our families. It’s time for Louisiana and other states to do better.
