So, I came across an article about the new Netflix series “Queen Cleopatra” causing some major uproar in Egypt because of the skin color of the lead character.
Basically, a lot of people are upset that the actress playing Cleopatra is not depicted as a white woman. Many Egyptians see Cleopatra as an icon and representation of their own culture, and believe that casting someone with a darker complexion is a slap in the face.
Personally, I find this all kind of ridiculous. I mean, it’s 2021, shouldn’t we be past this kind of thing? And let’s not forget that Cleopatra was actually of Greek descent, so who’s to say what her skin color really was?
But I do think this issue highlights a much bigger problem with representation in the media. People are still clinging to this outdated idea that the default protagonist should be white, and anything else is somehow wrong or inaccurate.
At the end of the day, it’s important for all of us to see ourselves reflected on screen, and that means having more diverse representation in the stories we consume. So whether or not Cleopatra was actually white, having a woman of color play her on screen shouldn’t be causing this level of controversy. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll see more progress towards inclusive representation in media.
