So, have you heard about the new Cleopatra docuseries trailer that Netflix just dropped? It’s causing quite a stir on social media because they’ve decided to depict the queen as black.
Essentially, the new series is a reimagining of the life of Cleopatra, the legendary queen of Egypt. And instead of casting a white actress in the role, as has traditionally been done, they’ve chosen a black actress, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, to play Cleopatra.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I think this is a pretty bold move on Netflix’s part. It’s definitely challenging the status quo and hopefully pushing Hollywood to be more inclusive and diverse when it comes to casting.
But at the same time, it’s important to remember that Cleopatra’s racial identity has been a topic of debate for years. Some historians argue that she was of Greek descent, while others believe she had Egyptian and/or Persian roots. Ultimately, we may never know the truth, but in any case, it’s great to see a new interpretation of her story that offers representation to black actresses and viewers.
Overall, I think this series has the potential to be a really impactful and important piece of media. It’s shedding light on an often oversimplified and misrepresented figure, while also promoting diversity and inclusivity in the film industry. Plus, I’m just excited to see Gugu Mbatha-Raw in action, because she’s an incredible actress!
