So, I was reading this article about Netflix cracking down on password sharing, and apparently they are officially eliminating this “benefit”. Essentially, what this means is that only the account holder and their immediate family members who reside in the same household will be allowed access to their account. Crazy, right?
According to the article, Netflix is doing this to deter password sharing and make sure that people pay for their own subscription. It makes sense, but honestly, I’m a little bummed. I share my Netflix account with a few friends, and it’s just nice to be able to split the cost and enjoy some different shows and movies that I might not have watched otherwise.
But I guess it’s not all bad news. Apparently, Netflix is also planning on cracking down on account sharing by using two-factor authentication and warning users if their account is being used in a different location than usual. They’re also working on some sort of “guest pass” system where account holders can give their friends temporary access to their account without giving away their password.
Overall, I think this move by Netflix is interesting and has its pros and cons. On one hand, it’s understandable why they would want to stop password sharing and make sure people are paying for their own subscription. On the other hand, it might be tough for those of us who rely on sharing accounts to watch our favorite shows and movies without breaking the bank. But who knows, maybe this will encourage me to finally start paying for my own subscription (or mooching off someone else’s “guest pass”!)
