Netflix Loses 1 Million Spanish Users Over Password Policing

So, I read this crazy article about how Netflix lost 1 million users in Spain because they were cracking down on password sharing. Basically, people were sharing their login info with friends and family who weren’t actually part of their subscription, and Netflix didn’t like that.

So they started screening for irregular activity and blocking nonsubscribers from using the account. Which, like, yeah, I get it, but apparently a lot of people were pretty upset about it.

Personally, I’ve never shared my Netflix password with anyone (not even my own family!), but I can see why some people might want to. Like, my cousin always asks to borrow my Hulu login because she’s a broke college student and I don’t mind - it’s not like we’re watching at the same time or anything.

But I can also see why Netflix would crack down on it. They don’t want to lose money from people who should be paying for their own account. I guess it’s just a reminder that we need to support the content we enjoy by paying for it.

Overall, it’s a pretty interesting topic because it brings up questions about ownership and access to media. How much should we have to pay for the privilege of streaming TV shows and movies? And is password sharing really that big of a deal, or is it just a way for companies to make more money? Either way, it’s definitely something to think about.
