Netflix will shut down its DVD rental business in September | Engadget

So, I just read an article about Netflix shutting down its DVD rental business in September. Basically, they’re finally putting an end to the DVD-by-mail service that made them famous back in the day. I remember when I first signed up for Netflix over a decade ago, I was so excited to get those red envelopes in the mail with my favorite movies inside. But with the rise of streaming, it was only a matter of time before the DVD rental business became obsolete.

According to the article, Netflix’s DVD rental service actually still had about 2.2 million users as of August 2021. But given that they currently have over 209 million subscribers for their streaming platform, it makes sense that they would want to focus their efforts there instead. Plus, with the pandemic causing a surge in streaming, it’s clear that’s where the future of entertainment is headed.

It’s funny to think about how much technology has changed since Netflix first started as a DVD rental service. I mean, now we can watch entire seasons of shows in one sitting instead of waiting for them to come in the mail! But it’s also interesting to see how companies adapt to changing times and prioritize their resources accordingly.

Overall, the article is a reminder that even the biggest brands have to evolve with the times or risk becoming irrelevant. It’s bittersweet to see Netflix’s DVD rental service go, but also exciting to think about what innovations they’ll come up with next.
