NFL Investigated Over Workplace Discrimination By New York And California

The NFL is under investigation by the states of New York and California over allegations of workplace discrimination. The investigation follows a year-long review by the NFL, which found that black players were at a higher risk of being diagnosed with brain injuries than their white counterparts. The league has agreed to pay out close to $1 billion in a settlement with former players. But the states’ investigations go beyond that issue, looking at possible discrimination from team management in hiring and promotion practices.

In a joint statement, the attorneys general of both states said “Employers must be held accountable if they are found to have engaged in unlawful workplace discrimination. Whether it be racial bias, gender bias, or bias against those who identify as LGBTQ, we will investigate and prosecute those who break the law.”

Recent protests against police brutality and systemic racism have led to increased scrutiny of discriminatory practices in all aspects of American life, including sports. The NFL’s history of racial and social inequality has come under increasing scrutiny from both fans and politicians in recent years. This latest investigation will likely add to the pressure on the league to make changes that address disparities in employment.
