Portsmouth’s proposed $834 million budget includes personal property tax relief, relocation of city jail

I just read an article about Portsmouth’s proposed $834 million budget, and there’s some interesting stuff in there. First off, they’re talking about offering personal property tax relief, which would be a huge help for a lot of people. Basically, if you own a car, boat, or other valuable item, you have to pay taxes on it every year. This can really add up, especially if you have multiple vehicles. So if Portsmouth goes through with this, it’ll be a big relief for folks who are already struggling to make ends meet.

But that’s not all. The city is also looking at relocating the city jail to a new location. This is something that’s been in the works for a while, and it makes a lot of sense. The current jail is pretty old and not in great condition, plus it’s right in the middle of the downtown area. Moving it to a new location would free up that prime real estate for other uses, and would also make the jail itself more modern and safe.

Personally, I’m really excited about the idea of tax relief. I remember when I was just starting out in my career, and money was really tight. I had an old car that I was trying to keep running, but the taxes on it were a real drain. It would have been a lot easier if I didn’t have to worry about that expense every year. And as for the jail, well, I’m not sure I have much of an opinion on that one way or the other. But it does seem like a good idea to me to have a modern, safe place to keep folks who have run afoul of the law.

All in all, I think this proposed budget is a step in the right direction for Portsmouth. By offering tax relief and upgrading the jail, they’re showing that they’re committed to making the city a better, safer, and more affordable place to live. If this budget goes through, I think a lot of people in the community will breathe a sigh of relief, and will be excited to see what other changes are in store for Portsmouth in the future.
