I just read this article on Hulu called Searching for Soul Food, and it’s honestly making me crave some comfort food! Basically, the show follows chef and author Stephen Satterfield on a journey around the United States to explore the roots of soul food and the ways in which it has been adapted and reinvented over time.
One of the main things that struck me was the diversity within the genre of soul food itself. Satterfield visits both classic mom-and-pop diners as well as modern fusion restaurants that take inspiration from traditional dishes but put a new spin on them. It’s fascinating to see how the same core ingredients and techniques can be used in so many different ways to create unique and delicious meals.
Another aspect that caught my attention was how Satterfield addresses the problematic history of soul food and its association with poverty and hardship. He talks about how, despite this history, many Black chefs and restaurateurs have worked tirelessly to elevate the cuisine and show the world just how delicious and complex it can be.
Overall, I think this show is an important exploration of culinary culture and history in America. It’s also just plain fun to watch and learn about different dishes and techniques from all over the country. Personally, I’m planning to hit up my local soul food joint ASAP!
