I just read this wild article about how Squid Game is getting an American remake from Netflix! If you haven’t seen the original Korean version yet, it’s basically this intense survival game where contestants compete in children’s games for a chance to win a ton of money. Sounds innocent enough, right? Wrong. Turns out the losers get eliminated…permanently.
Anyway, apparently Netflix is adapting the show for American audiences and the production budget is rumored to be over $1 billion (yes, that’s billion with a B). They’ve hired a big-time director and are planning to film it in Vancouver, Canada. Personally, I’m skeptical about whether or not it’ll live up to the original, but I’m still kind of excited to see what they do with it.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a foreign show has been remade for American audiences. The Office and Shameless are just a couple examples of successful adaptations. But at the same time, there are plenty of flops out there (cough cough, Death Note). So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Overall, I think the fact that Netflix is even attempting to make a show on this scale shows how popular and influential Squid Game has become. Plus, it’ll be cool to see American actors in the roles we’ve grown to love (or hate). I just hope they don’t mess it up!
