Study: Workplace EV charging could cut need for more power plants

As society continues to move towards renewable energy sources, electric vehicles (EVs) are quickly gaining popularity. However, one major concern is the increased demand for energy to power these vehicles. A recent study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory suggests that workplace EV charging could be an effective solution to this issue.

The study found that if 50% of workplace parking spots in the United States were equipped with EV charging stations, it could offset the need for 1,000 megawatts of additional power capacity, equal to the output of about three natural-gas power plants. This is because EVs are typically charged during off-peak hours, which can help balance the grid and alleviate high power demands during peak periods.

While the initial cost of installing charging stations may seem daunting, the study suggests that the long-term benefits, such as reduced air pollution and lower fuel costs for employees, could outweigh the expenses. Additionally, by promoting the use of EVs, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and attract environmentally-conscious clients and employees.

One example of successful workplace EV charging is an initiative by Google, which has installed over 1,000 charging stations at its offices worldwide. This has not only benefited employees but has also helped to promote EV adoption in the surrounding communities.

Overall, workplace EV charging has the potential to reduce the need for additional power plants and promote sustainable transportation. As more companies adopt this initiative, we can move closer to a future powered by clean energy.
