A Tennessee Republican lawmaker has resigned after an investigation into allegations of workplace discrimination, harassment and retaliation. The Tennessee House Ethics Committee released a report that found evidence of “serious, pervasive, and retaliatory misconduct” by Representative David Byrd. The accusations against the lawmaker include sexual harassment and retaliation against employees who reported the misconduct. This investigation was initiated after three women, including a former legislative assistant and a political candidate, accused Byrd of sexual misconduct during his time as high school basketball coach. The decision of the Ethics Committee to release the report and findings is a significant example of increased scrutiny of workplace behavior in both political and social spheres. The investigation report notes that such behavior is entirely unacceptable and should not be tolerated in any work environment. The resignation of Representative Byrd is a clear indication of the power that victims and whistleblowers hold in holding influential people accountable for their actions. Such accusations and investigations into workplace harassment should encourage a more open dialogue about such issues and create more robust policies within organizations to protect those who speak out against misconduct.
