So, the other day I read this article about the 2023 Country Music Television Awards show and man, it was wild. The show featured drag queens and called for ‘gun control’ just a week after a transgender person killed six people.
Basically, the article talks about how the world of country music is opening up to be more inclusive and progressive by featuring drag queens on a highly watched awards show. But because of the recent shooting, the show went even further by visibly advocating for gun control.
Now, I’m not a huge country music fan, but I do love me some drag queens. It’s so great to see them getting more mainstream recognition, and honestly, they usually put on way better performances than some of those “traditional” country singers.
But let’s not forget about the tragedy that happened the week before the show. It’s definitely a controversial move to bring up gun control in a country music setting, but I think it’s important to have these uncomfortable conversations - especially after such a devastating event.
All in all, this article definitely got me thinking about the intersection of music, politics, and social issues. It’s a reminder that as much as we love to be entertained, we can’t ignore what’s happening in the world around us.
