The Problem with Celebrity Travel Shows? The Celebrities
As travel shows gain in popularity, many TV networks rely on celebrities to host these programs, imagining that these celebrities’ fame will help boost ratings. However, this is not always the case. Celebrities are not always the right people to host travel shows, even if they are well known to the public.
Here’s why:
1) They might lack expertise Travel shows are more than just visiting exotic locations, eating strange foods, and doing adventurous activities. They require some level of expertise in storytelling, world history, geography, culture, and local customs. Unfortunately, many celebrities who host travel shows lack this expertise, leading to poorly executed shows.
2) Their focus is not on the destination When celebrities host travel shows, they often make the destination secondary to their own fame. They usually spend more time showcasing themselves than the location they visit, leading to a shallow portrayal of what could be a rich, diverse culture.
3) They are not relatable Celebrities have lives most of us could only dream of. In some cases, this causes them to showcase a lifestyle that is not representative of what most people’s realities. This deviation from reality can lead to less interest among viewers and a lack of connection between the audience and the show.
4) They can be insensitive Just because a celebrity is famous, it doesn’t make them immune to cultural insensitivity. The travels of some celebrities have caused controversy due to their lack of knowledge or sensitivity toward other cultures.
In conclusion, while having a celebrity host a travel show might seem like a good idea to attract viewers, it is not without its drawbacks. The lack of expertise, focus on self-promotion, being unrelatable, and potential cultural insensitivity can negatively impact the quality of the show. By using less famous, but more experienced hosts, a travel show can be far more engaging, informative, and inclusive.
