I came across this article on Newstalk about a new law called the Work Life Balance Bill that has been passed. It’s pretty interesting, actually. It means that employees now have the legal right to disconnect from work outside of working hours, which includes things like emails, calls and other work-related tasks.
This new law is a great win for workers who have been struggling with the pressure to “always be on” and the negative impact it can have on their work-life balance. Personally, I can relate to this a lot. I used to work for a company where I was expected to respond to emails even when I wasn’t at work, which made it hard to disconnect and really enjoy my down time. It can be really tough to switch off when you know there are still things going on at work that you need to deal with.
The Work Life Balance Bill will hopefully change that for a lot of people, giving them the chance to truly switch off and focus on their personal lives outside of work. Of course, there are still some questions about how it will be enforced and what impact it will have on businesses, but overall I think this is a step in the right direction. It’s important for employees to have boundaries and to be able to switch off from work and recharge.
So if you’re someone who feels like work is seeping into your personal life a little too much, this is definitely something to keep an eye on!
