So I came across this wild article about how some animal rights activists in Cleethorpes are putting up posters equating eating fish with eating cats. At first, I thought it was a joke or some sort of weird PR stunt, but it turns out they’re dead serious.
Basically, the argument is that fish are just as intelligent and capable of feeling pain as cats or other animals that we wouldn’t dare eat. And if you think about it, they kinda have a point. I mean, I’ve never really thought about the ethics of eating fish before, but it does feel a bit hypocritical to say we love animals and care about their welfare while chomping down on a plate of sushi.
Of course, there are people who will argue that fish are different and it’s all just a bunch of sentimental nonsense. But I think it’s worth considering the impact our actions have on the world around us, and questioning whether our current systems and habits are really sustainable or ethical in the long run.
At the end of the day, I don’t think this poster campaign is going to single-handedly put an end to fishing or anything like that, but I do think it’s an important conversation to have. It’s easy to get caught up in our own little bubbles and forget about the bigger picture, but every once in a while, something like this comes along to remind us that there’s a whole world out there beyond our own narrow perspectives.
