So, I just read this article about a dog who disappeared during the fall of Afghanistan but was recently reunited with his Army handler in the U.S. It’s a heartwarming story, but also sheds light on the bond between military working dogs and their handlers.
Basically, this dog named Blitz served in Afghanistan with his handler, Kevin Crowell. During the chaotic evacuation of the country, Blitz went missing and was believed to be left behind. But two years later, Kevin received a surprise call from the American Humane organization saying that they had found Blitz in Kabul and were bringing him back to the U.S.
I was really struck by how emotional the reunion was between Blitz and Kevin - it’s clear that these two had a special bond. It’s also amazing to think about how many military working dogs serve alongside their human counterparts, and how they too can suffer from the trauma of war.
This article made me think about my own experience with dogs - I grew up with a black Labrador retriever named Max who was the goofiest, most loyal pup I could imagine. I can’t even imagine how devastated I would be if he went missing for two years, let alone in such dangerous circumstances.
Overall, I think this article is a reminder of the resilience and bravery of both our military members and their service animals. It’s also a call to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices that these dogs make in service to our country.
