A kitten taken in by a Great Dane at a Michigan shelter has sadly passed away from a genetic condition. This heartwarming story started with the Great Dane, named Kate, taking the tiny kitten under her wing at the Michigan Humane Society. The feline, named Kumbali, was suffering from a viral infection when Kate gave him a cuddle and licked him clean. The moment went viral and touched the hearts of thousands of animal lovers around the world. Unfortunately, Kumbali was diagnosed with a genetic condition, Mason’s Syndrome, which ultimately led to his untimely death. The condition causes the connective tissues in the kitten’s body to expand uncontrollably, leading to severe joint and organ damage. The Michigan Humane Society said that while Kumbali’s passing is sad, they’re glad he got to spend his remaining days with a loving animal by his side.
Although it’s heartbreaking news, Kumbali’s story highlights the kindness and compassion that animals can show towards one another. It also draws attention to the importance of genetic testing for all animals, so these conditions can be identified and treated as early as possible. Mason’s Syndrome is not a common condition, but it’s deadly if not caught early, and the treatment options can be limited. So, let’s all take a moment to remember Kumbali and his incredible bond with Kate while also calling for more comprehensive health checks for all animals in our care.
