Pet arrives home, dog-tired, after Alaskan sea-ice odyssey - WTOP News

Have you ever heard of a dog traveling 50 miles through sea ice just to come back home? Me neither, until I read WTOP News’ article “Pet arrives home, dog-tired, after Alaskan sea-ice odyssey.” This heartwarming story follows 5-year-old Alaskan Malamute, Ako, who embarked on an incredible journey after being separated from his owner, Debbie Hickman.

Ako was left behind after Hickman and some friends went out to collect wood, and the sea ice beneath them broke apart, leaving them stranded. They were ultimately rescued by the Coast Guard, but Hickman had to leave Ako behind. She returned the next day with a snowmobile to retrieve her beloved pet, but he was nowhere to be found.

Days turned into weeks, and Hickman had almost given up hope when her son caught a glimpse of a dog that looked remarkably like Ako on the ice. After following tracks for four miles, they found the exhausted dog lying down, visibly happy to see his owner.

After examining Ako, the vet found him to be tired and stiff but overall healthy. His survival instincts kicked in during his arduous journey back home, and he managed to survive by catching fish.

This story highlights a dog’s determination to reunite with its owner, and is a reminder of the remarkable bond that exists between humans and their furry companions. It also highlights the dangerous conditions that exist in the Alaskan wilderness, emphasizing the need for caution when traveling or taking outdoor excursions.
