Thurs 6th April: Dogs are not wolves

So I was reading this article today about how dogs are not actually wolves - and it blew my mind! Growing up, I always thought that dogs were just domesticated wolves, but apparently that’s not quite right.

Basically, the article explains that while dogs do share DNA with wolves, they’ve actually evolved separately for thousands of years. In fact, some studies have shown that dogs actually have more in common genetically with humans than with wolves!

One of the big differences between dogs and wolves is their social behaviour. Dogs are able to read human emotions and body language, which is something that wolves aren’t as good at. And when it comes to social hierarchies, dogs tend to be more flexible and willing to share power than wolves.

But here’s where it gets really interesting - the article also explains how these differences are related to the way that dogs were domesticated in the first place. Humans selectively bred dogs for specific traits, like their ability to hunt or guard, which led to the wide variety of dog breeds that we have today. This artificial selection is what ultimately set dogs apart from their wild wolf ancestors.

Personally, I thought all of this was pretty cool because I’ve always been a dog lover. It’s fascinating to think about how we’ve shaped dogs over time to be such loyal and loving companions. It’s also important to remember that while dogs may look and act like wolves in some ways, they’re truly a unique and special species all on their own.

So if you’re a fellow dog enthusiast, or if you’re just curious about the evolution of animals, I definitely recommend checking out this article. It’s a quick and interesting read that sheds new light on a topic that we thought we already knew everything about.
